painters such as Thomas Cole, Asher Durand and
Frederic Church. North-South Lake Loop A 10
mile moderate hike around 2 interconnected lakes
that offers plenty of variety along the way.
Overlook Mountain & North-South Lake Loop Approaching
Overlook Mountain from the south (a 5 mile round
trip hike) means you'll probably be sharing
the trail with crowds of other people. Hikers
first pass by the Devils Kitchen lean-to, which
can come in handy if the weather turns inclement,
then giant boulders and seasonal wildflowers
that litter the forest floor. The trail eventually
leads to the ruins of the Overlook House, a
once-elegant 19th century hotel that was built
and destroyed by fire several times over before
finally being abandoned. Up on the summit, visitors
will find a nine story firetower, exceptional
views and one of the best picnic spots in the
state.
