Hunter Mountain Ski Resort
Find a Hotel or Resort Near Hunter Mountain Marketed as "the
snowmaking capital of the world," Hunter Mountain was the first ski
area to have 100% snowmaking and the first to have automated snowmaking.
Now the resort has over 1000 tower-mounted snowguns. Hunter is one of
the closest major ski resorts to New York City and inspired a Japanese
ski resort of the same name. The resort is considered one of the best
day-tripping ski areas in the Eastern US, with skiing on three mountains,
each suiting different abilities. The
runs at Hunter are up to two miles (3.2 km) long on north facing slopes,
with the toughest skiing, largely on Hunter west accessed by the Snowlite
Express high speed quad. These include Westway, a double black diamond
generally regarded as the most difficult. Forty percent of the terrain
is classified most difficult but beginners and intermediates have Hunter
One pretty much to themselves, with blues and greens. It's a well segregated
mountain. There is limited slopeside lodging at Hunter,
and the option to stay locally in a wide variety of accommodations. Long ago, the nickname, "The Snowmaking
Capitol of the World" was applied to Hunger. Whenever it is freezing
outside, Hunter's arsenal begins making snow and doesn't stop until the
temperature rises again. With Hunter One, Hunter Mountain and Hunter West,
there's triple the skiing for enthusiasts. Hunter One is the beginner's
area. It has five lifts and tows serving 16 trails for beginners and novices,
as well as some "more difficult" terrain for the intermediate
skier or rider. Hunter West boasts some of the most challenging terrain
to be found in the East, for advanced and top-expert skiers and snowboarders.
Hunter West's six trails are accessed by two chair lifts. Hunter Mountain
offers challenging skiing for novice and better skiers and snowboarders
on 31 slopes and trails accessed by two quad chair lifts and two triple
chairs.
Hunter's brand new learning center has revolutionized
the beginner experience with learner-friendly amenities and a spacious
new rental center. Thelearning center houses the ski and snowboard school,
children's programs, ticket sales, rental shop and Goldye's Cafe. The
learning zone terrain is conveniently located in the 33,000 square foot
center's backyard, with easy access for first - timers and children. GII-lift is designed for use by first-time
skiers and snowboarders, sporting a "Variable Frequency Drive"
which allows unlimited operation at virtually any speed. This is ideal
for beginners, since they can run it nice and slow in the morning, and
speed it up a little bit as beginner skiers and snowboarders gain confidence
during the day. GII will access the same terrain as the old rope tows.
If you're looking for the Big Mountain experience,
look no further. Hunter Mountain is only two hours north of Metropolitan
New York in the beautiful northern Catskill Mountains, and boasts trails
to impress and accommodate every skier and snowboarder. Whether you are
a first timer or a seasoned pro, the Hunter Mountain experience is a match
for your skills. With three mountains, Hunter
offers many of the traditional snow sports associated with mountain resorts.
We've broadened the possibilities for snow adventure and excitement by
offering snowshoeing, snowtubing, and a half-pipe in our Terrain Park,
allowing skiers, snowboarders and visitors of any skill level to relish
the great outdoors. Theres
a vertical drop of 1,600 feet and you'll ski or ride over 230 acres on
53 trails with more variety than you can handle in a day or two or more.
The lifts are fast, with a carrying capacity of nearly 15,500 skiers per
hour. With Hunter One, Hunter Mountain and Hunter West, theres triple
the fun.
Our beginner's area, Hunter One, has 5 lifts and tows serving 16 trails
for beginners and novices, as well as some "more difficult"
terrain for the intermediate skier or rider. Commitment is the word that
best describes the attitude toward snowmaking at Hunter Mountain. Long
ago, the nickname, "The Snowmaking Capitol of the World" was
applied and there will never be a more adequate moniker. Whenever the
weather dips to the freezing point, Hunter's arsenal begins to rage. And,
it doesn't stop until the temperature rises again. Traditionally -- and this past
winter was no exception -- Hunter has the deepest base in the Northeast.
When the reports are bleak across the Northeast, skiers and snowboarders
have learned to ignore them; they simply head to Hunter Mountain where
they know theres snow. Trail Map
